Located in Fremont County, Wyoming, Washakie Wilderness Ranch is situated at the base of Ramshorn Peak in the Wind River Mountains. Its location adjacent to the Shoshone National Forest gives this property a backyard of 2.4 million acres of contiguous national forest land available for recreation. Washakie Wilderness Ranch affords tremendous seclusion and privacy, yet is just 20 miles from the town of Dubois in the Wind River Valley.
Comprising 160 acres, Washakie Wilderness Ranch includes lush mountain meadows and beautiful spruce-aspen forestlands at elevations ranging from 8,200 to 8,500 feet. At the center is a half-acre trout pond filled by a small spring-fed creek that runs through the property. It is in its own private valley where the mighty Wind River Mountains and Absaroka Mountains meet, and there are tremendous alpine views in all directions. The ranch is located at the end of a private road that is shared by a handful of landowners. Should new owners wish to construct an additional dwelling or other facilities, there are a number of ideal building sites.
Nestled in the timber overlooking the Dunoir River Valley is a 1,845 sqft cabin with three bedrooms plus one and a half baths. Providing all the comforts of home with a full kitchen and huge rock fireplace in the main room, this mountain cabin is a perfect year-round getaway.
The location of Washakie Wilderness Ranch is ideal for observing a wide range of wildlife. Bordered on three sides National Forest and just miles from the Washakie Wilderness Area, there are many game species present, such as elk, moose, mule deer, and antelope. In addition, mountain lions, bears, wolves, bobcats, and even the elusive wolverine and lynx may be found in the area. The Washakie Wilderness Ranch has been a historical and principal migratory route for elk during the fall and winter months. For bird enthusiasts, this Wyoming ranch provides plenty of viewing opportunities for various types of hawks, eagles, owls, and songbirds.
Bisecting the valley below the ranch, the Wind River offers some of the best and most varied fishing in the country. The Upper Wind River is a free-flowing natural river dominated by cutthroat trout. As the river meanders down the valley, rainbow and brown trout populations increase, giving anglers the chance to land all three species in one day. Public fishing access points up and down the river offer some of the best fishing near the town of Dubois. The ranch is also a horse enthusiast’s dream, with direct access to public land and literally thousands of miles of public trails and millions of acres to explore. A person could step off the front porch and travel the same trails once used by Teddy Roosevelt, Chief Joseph, and John Colter.
