Sheep Creek Ranch

Sold: 2011 Sheep Creek Ranch Manila, UT

Details & Features

Sheep Creek Ranch is located approximately 7 miles south of Manila, Utah, on County Road #1370, 56 miles north of Vernal, Utah, and 55 miles south of Green River, Wyoming. Manila is the county seat of Daggett County and is located on the Utah/Wyoming border just west of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. This area is known as the Lucerne Valley and consists of Manila and Washam, Wyoming. This small community is supported by ranching, recreation, tourism, fishing, boating, hunting, oil and gas, mining and government. Local amenities include restaurants, convenience stores, lodging and a marina. The Manila Airport has a 5,300’ runway and can handle small planes. Commercial air service is available in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Vernal, Utah, and the Salt Lake City International Airport is approximately 3 hours away.

The ranch consists of 234.37 deeded acres with approximately 50 acres of irrigated land and 120 acres of state-leased land that is fenced within the ranch boundary for grazing purposes and adjacent to the deeded property. Sheep Creek Ranch is surrounded by state lands and the Ashley National Forest. It offers thousands of acres to enjoy and explore. The ranch has historically been used for hay production and cattle grazing. In 1885, Cleophus Dowd homesteaded Sheep Creek until his death in 1897. Dowd and two of his children are buried on the ranch. Cleophus hired Harry Longabaugh as a ranch hand and gave him the nickname “The Sundance Kid”.

Improvements include two small barns, corrals, irrigation system, power, water well and septic. The fences have been built for convenience and there are variations between the locations of the existing fence lines and the legal description. Not all of the property lines are fenced as natural barriers have been used in the past for livestock control.

Sheep Creek meanders through the ranch for approximately one mile offering private fishing for wild trout. Anglers can expect to find cutthroat, rainbow and brook trout lurking in the pools and riffles along Sheep Creek. There are miles of additional fishing opportunities along Sheep Creek on the neighboring state lands and national forest. Every fall, there are two spawning runs of Kokanee Salmon (one in September and one in October) up Sheep Creek from the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Fishing is closed during this time from the reservoir to the national forest boundary for the collection of eggs for state hatcheries. This has become an attraction and there are viewing areas for the public where Highway 44 crosses Sheep Creek.

Sheep Creek Ranch is an exceptional recreational ranch that is completely surrounded by state lands and national forest with convenient access to Manila. The ranch has plenty of room for horses or a few head of cattle, and provides privacy along with breathtaking 360-degree views.
