Cabin Bluff

Sold: 2020 Cabin Bluff St. Simons, Georgia

Details & Features

“Cabin Bluff has changed since Howard Coffin purchased it from its founders in 1928, a conservation easement now exists for the first time with the TNC and the Navy.  But what intrigued him still exists today, like always, a rare retreat of quiet solitude and natural beauty in the midst of the Golden Isles coast of Georgia, near Sea Island and St Simons Island, minutes from I-95.  My favorite thing about Cabin Bluff is that you can be in the famous quail woods or hunting turkeys in the morning and before the sun sets you can be in the marsh or just off the beach battling redfish or tarpon on fly without ever leaving your property.  I’m not aware of another property like Cabin Bluff. The historic cabins and main lodge are the original structures and still contain many of the old pictures of Coffin and friends, including Presidents, hunting turkeys and quail in black and white.  It’s a living history, there is only one Cabin Bluff.

The original owner of Cabin Bluff was the Floyd Family of the Sea Island Cotton Company who founded the Camden Hunt Club in 1827.   Many credit this as being the first members-only hunt club in the United States.  Coffin bought it in 1928 after their use of the property had waned.  The Nature Conservancy purchased the 10,300-acre Cabin Bluff property from Mead Westvaco in 2018, as part of that sale they gave 7,000 acres to the Georgia DNR for a new Wildlife Management Area open to the public for hunting and recreation.

The purchase of the remaining Cabin Bluff acreage by our client includes the historic Intercoastal dock and private marina, the guest cabins and the main lodge, 9-hole golf course and sporting clays course and 3,267 acres along the West side of the Intercoastal waterway, locally known as the Cumberland River.  One of the really special things about Cabin Bluff is that there exists amongst 7 distinct owners more than 22,000 contiguous acres of like-minded ownership and some of the most outstanding recreational and outdoor activities in the southeast, I’m not aware of another property with a combination of all these opportunities in one place.

Get To Know Georgia Georgia Ranches for Sale

Georgia

Georgia land for sale is one of the last places in the country to combine affordability, quality and availability of land, creating great value and opportunity for landowners. The state is diverse with a variety of landscapes and several distinct ecosystems including the foothills of the Appalachians in north Georgia, the Red Hills of southwest Georgia and the coastal maritime forests. The coastal timberlands, with access to fishing and hunting from the same property and the wild quail plantations of the Red Hills attracted wealthy northerners in the 1800’s looking for a therapeutic climate and bountiful recreational opportunity.  These early pioneers gave rise to most of the current plantations and large managed landholdings that still exist today. In fact, southwest Georgia remains home to the largest concentration of plantation lands in the US and the coastal estuaries, tidal marshes and forests of coastal Georgia are widely recognized as one of the most unique and special ecosystems in the country.
